The Scene:

Enter the world of Private Detective Archie Goodwin, and take a stroll through midtown Manhattan to Sam’s on 10th. It’s New York City, 1934. Your imagination runs wild as you see shiny Auburn convertibles and Hudson Straight 8 motorcars gliding down the busy afternoon streets.

You step inside Sam’s on 10th restaurant. A suit-clad Archie Goodwin sits in a booth, working on his third glass of milk. He nonchalantly orders two more bananas, figs with sweet cream and a delicious slice of spiced raisin bread.

Moments later, Goodwin casually flicks his eyes at Saul Panzer, seated inconspicuously at the luncheonette counter. Saul slowly tips his newspaper to Orrie Cather, sitting at the shoe-shine across the street.

It dawns on you: this ain’t no ordinary afternoon meal, sweetheart. You just walked in on a stake-out by order of Nero Wolfe! One thing’s for certain: Archie Goodwin isn’t going to let his dangerous mark slip through his able mitts today.

First appearing as narrator and live-in assistant detective to Nero Wolfe in, “Fer-De-Lance”, (1934), written by author Rex Stout, Archie Goodwin has appeared every Nero Wolfe novel and short story, television show, film adaptation, theatrical play and radio program.

Witty, somewhat antagonistic, sharp-tongued man-of-action Archie Goodwin is a licensed private detective. He’s also a skilled observer and able typist with a trained eye for detail that provides shut-in detective Nero Wolfe with the essential information he needs to solve each case from the comfort of his easy-chair. Born in Ohio, Archie is good-looking, 6 feet tall, universally loved by the ladies, and perpetually 32 years old.
