THE SCENE: Take the brownstone’s private elevator up to the “The Plant Rooms”, New York City, 1934, and enter the world of Private Detective Nero Wolfe. Let your imagination run wild as you see Theodore Horstmann, alongside a yellow pajama-clad Wolfe, carefully tending to a stem of exotic purple orchids. These warm rooms are brimming with flowers. Nero Wolfe insists that he not be disturbed while tending to his rare and lovely orchids, which he does every morning without fail from 9:00am until 11:00am, and again in the evening from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. When Wolfe’s able-bodied employee and sidekick, Archie Goodwin, telephones the Plant Rooms to inform him of a new case that is currently unfolding downstairs in the brownstone’s office, Wolfe cannot be bothered. “Confound it, Archie! Send them away!” barks the temperamental master detective. Before he can hang up, Archie reminds Nero Wolfe that keeping his lovely orchids costs money – money that they currently don’t have. “Pfui!” Wolfe exclaims as he slams the telephone onto its receiver – but shortly after 11:00am, Nero Wolfe arrives in the office dressed, shaved and ready to meet with the potential client just the same.

FEATURED DETECTIVE: Private Detective Nero Wolfe. First appearing in the novel, “Fer-De-Lance”, (1934), written by author Rex Stout, larger-than-life detective Nero Wolfe has appeared in 74 novels and short stories by Rex Stout, along with 13 novels written by Robert Goldsborough with the permission of the Stout Estate. In addition, Nero Wolfe has been featured in 3 television shows, a made-for-TV movie, 2 film adaptations, 4 theatrical plays and 4 separate multi-episode radio programs airing from 1943-1982.
CHARACTER STUDY: Born in Montenegro, perpetually 56 years old, and notoriously tight-lipped about his past, eccentric and often short-tempered armchair sleuth Nero Wolfe is large in size, and even larger in reputation. Referred to as brilliant, Nero Wolfe is New York City’s finest master detective. He shares his luxurious West 35th Street brownstone with orchid expert Theodore Horstmann, Swiss chef Fritz Brenner, and sharp-witted detective and personal assistant Archie Goodwin, who acts as Wolfe’s legman out in the world so that the reclusive genius may be spared the rigors of leaving the brownstone to investigate, an act that he finds almost unbearably disagreeable.
